- Hainan (China), endemic – mountain streams and forests

- CITES-protected (genus Cuora spp. at least Appendix II; sometimes assigned to the galbinifrons complex = Appendix I) / EU Annex - registration requirement, proof of origin. IUCN: Critically Endangered (possibly extinct in the wild).
- Brumation
- Largely none (tropical, Hainan); at most a slight winter drop.
- Cohabitation
- Single housing; solitary/territorial. The reason is territory: males ram and bite one another, and females are harassed so persistently during prolonged courtship that they visibly lose weight. Worn shell edges and bites on the hind legs are what you end up showing the vet.
Notes
The taxonomy is disputed (a species of its own, possibly an old hybrid, or a population in the C. galbinifrons complex). Extremely rare, and practically only in conservation breeding. Very little species-specific husbandry data – the figures are derived from its climate and origin and from related Cuora (low confidence).
